U.S. 29 northbound at Route 28 in Remington reopened Friday morning with temporary repairs to a traffic signal damaged in a fiery crash late Wednesday.

In a Facebook post, the Remington Volunteer Fire Department said crews were called to the intersection for a single-vehicle crash with the car engulfed in flames.

"Crews deployed hose lines to extinguish the fire and began evaluating the single occupant, who was free of the vehicle," the fire department said in the post. It appears the driver suffered only minor injuries.

A detour was in place all day Thursday. The Virginia Department of Transportation reported the detour lifted as of 7:38 a.m.

There was a problem reporting this.

Within weeks of its installation, my wife and were headed to Northern Virginia and passed the intersection of Route 29 and 28.

The instant I saw the signal pole with its "protective" bollards I said its siting was a collision waiting to happen. I was incredulous that VDOT would place a potentially fatal obstruction no more than teen feet from the edge of the northbound travel lane.

Both northbound and southbound signal poles could have been placed more safely within the median strips on their respective sides of the intersection with better protection provided by impact attenuation barriers or simple Jersey barriers.

Thankfully, this collision did not cause any loss of life, but unfortunately, there will be a next time. With luck, and a bit of $$$, the poles can be moved to a safer location before any lives are lost.
